Rohde & Schwarz Launches R&S RadEsT: Next-Gen Radar Target Simulator for Cutting-Edge Testing

Next-generation radar technology is essential for the advancement of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) and autonomous driving (AD). These systems demand unparalleled accuracy, efficiency, and reliability in testing solutions. Rohde & Schwarz has answered this need with the revolutionary launch of the R&S RadEsT (Radar Essential Tester), an ultra-compact, versatile radar target simulator designed to streamline testing across the radar sensor lifecycle—from lab-based functional testing to production-level vehicle checks—while delivering an unprecedented price-performance ratio.

Munich, September 23, 2024 — The R&S RadEsT opens new horizons for precision, reliability, and dynamic radar testing. It covers a broad range of use cases, including system validation, radar module debugging, software verification, and functional tests. Perfectly suited for OEM end-of-line testing, it enables radar alignment and calibration as well as in-depth functional checks during production, going beyond traditional passive reflective elements.

The R&S RadEsT captures, processes, and returns radar sensor signals as simulated targets, offering rapid adaptation to simulate fast-moving objects. This capability is critical for assessing the performance of ADAS features such as Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) and Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC). The device allows real-time configuration of target distance, velocity/Doppler, and attenuation/RCS, delivering an unmatched level of simulation flexibility.

Equipped with 12 receive and 12 transmit patch antennas with varied polarizations, R&S RadEsT enables target simulation from any angle, eliminating the need for mechanical movement. Its built-in detection system seamlessly adjusts to diverse radar sensor polarizations, ensuring accurate and realistic testing.

In addition, R&S RadEsT integrates advanced analysis features, offering direct measurement of key radar sensor parameters such as Equivalent Isotropically Radiated Power (EIRP) and occupied bandwidth. Despite its cutting-edge capabilities, the device’s compact and lightweight design ensures easy setup and integration into various test environments, with the added option of battery-powered operation for maximum portability.

The self-check feature continuously monitors the system’s performance, alerting users to any deviations or abnormalities, ensuring long-term consistency in testing results.

To minimize reflections and multipath interference, R&S RadEsT incorporates small patch antennas and an absorber-covered surface for a clean RF frontend with low RCS. Optional compact shielding systems, like the R&S RadEsT-Z50 pyramidal and R&S RadEsT-Z55 straight, further enhance testing accuracy by reducing close-range targets and unwanted reflections, from lab environments to vehicle-level testing.

This innovative solution positions R&S RadEsT as a critical tool for advancing ADAS and autonomous driving development, bringing unprecedented precision and efficiency to radar testing.
